Dining culture with a tradition

The world of decanters

At the heart of sophisticated dining culture is the art of enjoyment, shaped by tradition and innovation. The history of the decanter, which was already being used in the 18th century as an artistically decorated container to serve wine, is a testament to a cultural development.

The focus was originally on aesthetics rather than the ideal shape to develop the wine's aroma. Nevertheless, it was crucial that the wine carafe was made of pure class to highlight the wonderful color of the wine.

Today, decanters have developed into a symbol of elegance and hospitality, a tradition we would like to honor with our decanters and carafes.

Masterful decanting

A guide for wine lovers

Choosing the right container for wine is a science in and of itself, but it significantly impacts the wine experience.

Whether choosing between a decanter or a wine carafe, or choosing the right vessel for young or old wines, as well as for white and red wines – every detail counts.

The ability to choose the ideal vessel for the respective wine or beverage makes the difference between good enjoyment and exceptional enjoyment.

Wine decanter or wine carafe? The shape and function decide

In the world of wine enjoyment, decanters and wine carafes are crucial and go beyond simple vessels. They optimize the enjoyment of young and old wines through targeted aeration and skillful decanting.

With its wide base and long, narrow neck, the decanter separates the sediment and the tartar. The wine carafe, on the other hand, is often characterized by its generous wide design, giving young wines room to develop their bouquet.

Aerating or decanting: Between art and science

Aerating wine gives young wines room to breathe so they can develop their full flavor. The wine is decanted into a bulbous container here to allow more contact with the air.

When it comes to mature wines, however, decanting is used to separate solids and enjoy the wine clear and free of residue. This symbolizes care and respect for the wine.

Let it breathe: the secret to perfectly served wines

“Letting wine breathe” is a delicate and fascinating ritual that subtly changes the essence and character of the wine. Young red wines only first develop their full complexity and depth through a longer aeration period, while older vintages only require a gentle and shorter aeration to preserve their fine nuances.

The decision as to whether and how long a wine needs to breathe is a skillful consideration. It is influenced by a number of factors including the age of the wine and the characteristics of the respective grape variety. This delicate consideration is the key to letting each wine shine in its best light.

The perfect decanter for every bouquet

Decanting reveals that wines are much more than just red or white wines. This idea is also reflected in the product range of Villeroy & Boch decanters, which are not only designed according to color, but also according to all of the characteristics of the wine.

Complex bouquets that are described by sommeliers as masculine require more oxygen to optimally develop before being enjoyed. This requires spaciously designed red wine carafes, since they offer a large surface area for the breathing process.

In contrast to this, the fine aromas of delicate, feminine wines could evaporate in these decanters and their velvety taste could be reduced. That is why the wine decanters for wines such as Bordeaux and pinot noir were designed with a slim shape, since this preserves and protects the bouquet.

Whether a strong red wine, subtle white wine or smooth whiskey – there is a perfect decanter for every bouquet.

Decanters for red wine

Decanting red wine varies depending on the type and age of the wine. For young, tannin-rich red wines, such as cabernet sauvignon or Bordeaux, it helps to reduce the tannins and highlight the complexity. An aeration time from one and a half to two hours is recommended to develop its full character. Lighter red wines, such as pinot noir, only require one hour in the decanter. Older red wines require a gentler aeration of a maximum of 30 minutes to preserve their delicate aromas and avoid over-oxidation.

Decanters for white wine

Decanting white wines, especially with fuller varieties such as chardonnay or old riesling, can enrich the aroma and the flavor. White and rosé wines also benefit from a short decanting time, ideally about 30 minutes. Aerating for an hour can refine the flavor of younger wines. Too much cooling can have a negative impact on the aroma, which is why some courage is needed to forge new paths and enjoy white wines in a new way.

Decanters for whiskey

Decanting whiskey is simple and refined, and improves the aroma and taste. A rest period of 30 minutes allows the whiskey to develop its aromas and gives the sediments time to settle. Use an airtight decanter to prevent evaporation and to keep the whiskey fresh.
